Onsite Training Course Description:
This program designed for forensic pathologists and toxicologists includes 3 days of classroom-based sessions that provide an overview of basic forensic toxicology principles, general pharmacokinetics, and takes a deeper dive into the pharmacology and toxicology of the major drugs classes associated with drug caused and related deaths. Specialized topics such as the pathology and histopathology of drug-related deaths, pediatric and geriatric toxicology, and the phenomenon of postmortem redistribution are also covered.
For each drug class reviewed by our instructors, the lecture will address mechanisms of action, pharmacodynamics (with a focus on adverse effects), reference range data with literature citations, and typical case data.
Guest forensic pathologist, Dr. James Gill, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Connecticut will be on hand for all lectures and discuss how the toxicology results factor into cause and manner of death determinations. Some of the drug classes included are opiates and opioids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants and anxiolytics, cannabinoids, and alcohol and ketones and their involvement in ketoacidosis. Other activities focus on sample accessioning, mass spectrometry screening techniques, and spending dedicated time in breakout groups with casework-experienced forensic toxicologists for case discussion.
The program includes a laboratory tour and orientation at NMS Labs, reviewing sample preparation and analysis on various liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry instruments.
