Course Description
Ethics in forensic science governs the responsible application of scientific principles within the adversarial legal system, where determinations of guilt or innocence are made. While forensic scientists are expected to remain objective and impartial, they may encounter situations in which scientific findings conflict with courtroom strategies, attorney expectations, or litigation pressures. These circumstances can place practitioners in ethically complex and professionally challenging positions.
This interactive workshop examines common ethical dilemmas faced by forensic scientists serving as expert witnesses, including responding to misleading or incomplete questioning, ensuring accurate presentation of evidence, and balancing professional integrity with legal constraints. Participants will explore real-world case examples and discuss how professional standards, legal obligations, and personal ethics intersect in courtroom practice.
Through facilitated discussions, interactive breakout sessions, and collaborative case analysis, participants will actively engage in ethical decision-making and practical problem-solving. The workshop emphasizes preparation for testimony, effective courtroom communication, and maintaining credibility under scrutiny, equipping forensic professionals with tools to navigate ethical challenges and uphold scientific integrity in the pursuit of justice.
